Dr. Schanin reflects on his philosophy and vast experience with Jewish education around the world and in Israel. In addition, he describes his approach to Zionism, Zionist education, and Reconstructionist Judaism in Israel. Norman Shanin’s book is both an interesting and important résumé of a creative life of service, as well as a moving personal document of a modest educational innovator. Schanin is a student of Mordechai Kaplan, who set out to reconstruct Judaism as a civilization, created in Eretz Israel, (which has been and is its center). Schanin took this philosophy seriously, and consequently made his home in Israel, in 1968. This was preceded by his service in World War 2 as a Jewish Chaplain in the US Navy, completing his education, serving as Director of the largest Zionist youth movement in the US {“Young Judea”} and as the Director of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. One of the most important personal experiences in his growth, described in the book, was that of the close – knit group {the “Kvutza”}, interestingly applied by him as a powerful educational tool during his chaplainship (in Manilla). It was a natural outgrowth, that he assumed the leadership role of a youth movement, as his first professional position. His educational philosophy fused a commitment to the nurturing of Jewish life in the US, to Zionism and the build-up of Israel, and to Democracy and the search for peace. In Israel, as Director of the David Yellin College for education, all his earlier experiences came to bear. He led the David Yellin College, to be the first academic teachers training institution in Israel. He introduced there an academic program in the realm of early childhood, to become a model for most other teachers training colleges. David Yellin, under his leadership, was the first to initiate a training program for the Arab minority. The reading of the book cannot but bring you to wish this deeply committed educational innovator, many years of activity in his community (“Mevakshei Derech”), surrounded by the members of his family.
