One of the most exclusive and most significant voices of modern Hebrew poetry died out. Before his death, Natan Yonatan started working on his book Within The Song To Live, a bi-lingual, Hebrew- English edition, which Gefen Publishing House is proud to publish. The book is a representative selection of poems chosen by the poet in order to introduce his poetry to English speaking readers. The poetry is read, sung and quoted in Israel at times of celebrations and memorials and it enjoys an incomparable popularity. The poet opted for a bilingual edition of his work for the sake of speakers and lovers of Hebrew who live in English speaking countries. He entrusted the work of translating his poetry to Ms. Janice Rebibo, who began this task as far back as 1997. The book includes a CD with a selection of Natan Yonatan's composed poems that have been turned into popular folk songs. Set in 10-110 CE, Hanina My Son records the emergence of Christianity; the bitter fighting between the Pharisees and Sadducees, Shammaites and Hillelites, Zealots and Roman oppressors; the establishment of the Sanhedrin; the development of Judaism’s Oral Law; the destruction of the First Jewish Temple and the subsequent rejuvenation of the Jewish spirit. Arguably, there has been no other time in history, until perhaps the 20th century, to have witnessed so many momentous events. Yet people lived and loved, prospered and suffered. Hanina My Son is based on the Talmud (from which it includes a large number of dramatically presented passages), on Josephus Flavius and other Roman writers. However, told from a Jewish perspective, it is laden with ethical considerations, because the Hebrews viewed ethics – the essence of the commandments – to be strictly observed and cherished even at times of the greatest afflictions and deprivations. Hanina’s son-in-law, Archinas, also has his own story to tell: how he converted to Judaism and fell in love with Hanina’s daughter, their wonderful marriage, and her death, which left him heartbroken. Now aged 99, he recounts his story, entwined with Hanina’s story and the story of the Jewish people, in this convincing and powerful literary feat. Filled with famous personalities, such as Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Yohannan ben Zakai and Rabbi Yehoshua ben Haninya, whom Sanders recreates with impressive clarity and fervor, this docu-fiction is a fascinating journey for Jews, Christians and fans of the genre. Less than forty years later, the reality has surpassed the dream. The Gush Etzion region has been transformed into the capital of modern religious Zionism. The book deals with the conception of Kingship against the background of the different approaches to kingship both in Biblical literature and in the political views prevalent in the Roman Empire. In the bible one finds three (exclusive) approaches to kingship: rejection of the king as a legitimate political institution - since God is the (political) king; a version of royal theology according to which the king is divine (or sacral); and a view that God is not a political king yet the king has no divine or sacral dimension. The king is flesh and blood; hence his authority and power are limited. He is a Subordinated King. While the first conception in its day to day realization is close to anarchy, according to the second conception the king holds all the powers – in foreign and domestic affairs, in the law, economy, administration, army, and especially in the religious and the ceremonial realms. In contrast, the third conception subscribes to the principle of separation of powers: between the King, and the high court (Sanhedrin, bet ha-din ha-gadol), the priests and the prophets. The sages of the Mishnah and Talmud were well aware of these three conceptions. In the legal-halakhic parts of the Talmudic literature (Mishnah, Tosefta, parts of the halakhic midrash, and the halakhic discussions in the Babylonian and Palestinian Talmuds) the Sages followed the third conception of kingship, restructuring it according to their theological and socio-political views. When compared to the theological-political views common in the ancient near east and in late antiquity the political model designed by the Talmudic sages is a genuine innovation. Nonetheless, there are in the aggadic (non-halakhic) parts of the Talmudic literature echoes of the other two biblical conceptions of kingship, which undermine the conception that constitutes the halakhic sources.

For teachers, students, and Hebrew lovers everywhere! During the years that have passed since writing those lines, despite my concentrating on other topics, I continued to search for textual witnesses of the Sifre that were concealed in libraries throughout the world, in the East and the West, and I continued my efforts to interpret its expositions and decipher its hidden treasures. Now, after having completed the preparations for the entire edition and the commentary for the first half of the work, comprising the portions of Naso and Beha`alotekha, I decided the time has come to publish them.Sifre is a Tannaitic midrash on the book of Numbers, and is rightfully considered to be one of the fundamental assets of our ancient literature. Its previous edition was published about ninety years ago by R. Hayyim Shaul Horovitz. Since then, additional manuscripts have been discovered of Sifre, its first commentators, and medieval collections and midrashim that cite it. This was accompanied by the significant development of the methodological conceptions of the study of the Rabbinic literature, and of the ways to publish critical editions of this literature. All these factors justify the publication of a new scientific edition of this midrash. The text of the new edition, that is based on MS. Vatican 32, includes many versions that differ from the earlier version, and that occasionally shed new light on the exegeses and halakhot of the Sifre. It is accompanied by the scholarly apparatus that lists and explains all of the edition`s changes from the version of MS. Vatican. The number of direct and indirect textual witnesses presented in the Textual Variants section of the new edition is twice, and at times even triple, the number of textual witnesses that were available to Horowitz. In the detailed commentary on the expositions in Sifre, I made considerable use of all the Sifre commentators who preceded me, and who made a decisive contribution to the literal explanation of the midrash`s exegeses and the clarification of their meaning. Thanks, however, to the diverse textual witnesses available to me and the great progress made in recent generations in the study of the language and teachings of the Tannaim, I believe that I have succeeded in recreating the original version of many expositions, in giving them a new and straightforward explanation, and in advancing the research of their redaction. The edition is intended, first and foremost, for the scholars, in Israel and throughout the world, who are engaged in the research of all aspects of the Rabbinic literature. Additionally, the new edition will likely aid the community of Torah scholars who teach and study in yeshivot, and the educated public at large. olume 1 Preface Symbols of the textual witnesses of Sifre on Numbers List of symbols in the edition Introduction Editing rules for the text and the accompanying scholarly apparatus Textual variants Parallels passages in Talmudic literature The commentary Edition of Sifre on Numbers, portions of Naso and Beha'alotekha (the base text, and below it: 1. Hasten is a man driven by truth, hard work, devotion to family and community, and above all, commitment to Judaism and G-d. These principles, lovingly imparted by his parents, saw Hart Hasten through unimaginable sufferings. Fleeing from Nazi-occupied Poland to Khazakhstan, the Hasten's eked out an existence of day-to-day survival. In spite of the starvation, deprivation and persecution, Hart and his family survived, only to learn of the decimation of virtually the entire Jewish population of their hometown Bohorodczany, including the extended Hasten family. From his astonishing talents in business management, to his equally impressive gift for communal fundraising; from building a loving, Jewish home to forging relationships with Israeli politicians and international statesmen, Hart Hasten's life is one of purpose and achievement, courage and direction, that has led him to the Knesset, to the White House, and to friendships with people who have shaped the course of modern history. Most notable was his intimate friendship with former Israeli prime minister, Menachem Begin. Through all this, Hart N. She is marked for death, too, until Eichmann intervenes. When Sarah rebuffs Eichmann’s romantic advances, she is arrested and sent to the camps. Can Sarah escape and survive long enough to find justice for the atrocities she was forced to endure? Will evil prevail and consign her to a life of fear and terror? Observe Sarah on her journey from the darkest days of the Holocaust to the day she enters a Jerusalem courtroom to face Adolf Eichmann.

Bambara presents a fascinating new theory of the Exodus through the Sahara desert. Tefos et Hayehudi is the Hebrew title and it recounts the adventures of gonzo journalist Tuvia Tenenbom, who wanders around Israel and the Palestinian Authority for seven months in search of the untold truths in today's Holy Land. With holy chutzpah, Tenenbom boldly goes where no Jew has gone before, at times risking his life as he assumes the identities of Tobi the German and even Abu Ali in order to probe into the many stories in this strange land and poke holes in all of them. From the self-hating leftists in Tel Aviv to the self-promoting PLO execs in Ramallah, from the black-clad Haredim of Bet Shemesh to the glowing foreign human rights activists in Beit Hanina, from Jewish settlers and the Christians who come from abroad to toil with them to ardent Jerusalem monks and Bedouins in surprisingly glorious shacks, Tenenbom takes on the people of the land, getting to know them and disarming them as he breaks bread and mingles with anyone and everyone. Does Palestinian wife number one hate the Jews more than she hates wife number two? Who finances cash-rich NGOs pursuing a Judenrein Israel? Who sets Palestinian olive groves on fire and why? What is the emotional gravity that pulls idealistic human rights activists from other countries to Israel and only to Israel? Who are the flaming feminists who sacrifice their lives for the rights of polygamists? Whose land is this, anyway? By turns poignant, enraging, and laugh-out-loud funny, this unique travelogue lays bare the intensity of this turbulent land in an unprecedented, eye-opening education, person by person, city by city, and meal by meal.
