Faitelson’s original account was published in seven languages. This new edition presents a broad gallery of cynical and cruel Nazi murderers – wild beasts on two legs, the organizers and leaders of the mass murder of the Jews of Kovno, as well as the thousands of Jews brought to the Ninth Fort from central and western Europe. At the same time, there is a description of the “Actions” – the mass murders of men, women, children and the elderly whose only “crime” was to be born to a Jewish mother. At the heart of the story are the corpse-burners, the preparations they made to escape from hell, the escape itself and the fate of the escapees. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alex Faitelson survived the Holocaust, having lost his parents, his kin and his friends. He was an active member of the Anti-Fascist Fighting Unit (AKO) of the Kaunas Ghetto. In the highest tradition of the soldier-statesman, Dr. Israel Eldad advocates a form of Zionism that is unpopular in conventional society. He condemns “establishmentarian,” “social-club” Zionism as a belittling of Jewish history and a threat to Jewish lives. In its place, he calls for a revolutionary creed – one that dares assert its right to the Jewish homeland; not as defined by diplomats, politicians and Security Council Resolutions, but in biblical, historical terms. He boldly declares that Jewish “diplomacy” failed to save millions of European Jews, and he accuses world leaders of inviting new Holocausts by denying history’s lessons and ignoring its imperatives. He warns the Jewish people that it can rely only on its own forces, and he offers a solution to the Arab problem in the Middle East. In his book, Sharon details the brutal treatment and interrogations that he experienced in prison. Though Sharon was tortured, though he had no idea what was happening, he held strong through the power of prayer and faith. In his heart he believed that God could save him, that there would be some way out – he never gave up. And we, her family, accompanied her fearfully and lovingly, saw her develop in life and were thankful for her successes. At the conclusion of her studies she entered the field of education as an elementary school teacher. Quietly and diligently, acting as a role model and dedicating herself to each child, she succeeded in earning the trust of her students and their parents. What s the best way for traveling musicians to schlep their instruments to a wedding in a faraway village? Why, in an old baby carriage, of course! But when the mischievous carriage takes off by itself and rolls from village to village, oy vey, oy vey, only a sweet klezmer song can save the day. Join the Klezmer Bunch on a bumpy journey all the way to the wedding ceremony and sing along with the happy bride and groom. A wedding like this has never been seen A yidl mit fiddle and violin. The relatives drank vodka Till their beards dropped. And the in-laws gobbled goose and pastrami Till their bellies popped. Amalia Hoffman captures the spirit and soul of klezmer with charming and whimsical illustrations where the music is playfully intertwined with every detail of village life. Reviews: “It’s a winner! The Klezmer Bunch is a rollicking, informative tale with art so witty and lyrical that one can almost hear the music playing. Bravo, Amalia!” – Pat Cummings , author and\/or illustrator of thirty books for children, recipient of the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children “Once again Amalia’s illustrations take the reader on a dynamic, extraordinary journey and the informative text serves as a cultural bridge!” – R. For this reason it is customary to consider the section along with its traditional commentaries. It is important to know not only what the Torah meant when it was written, but also what it has meant within Judaism since then. It is also important for intellectual honesty to distinguish between the two. Moderns also have the advantage of using the results of linguistic studies and comparative studies of other ancient texts as well as archaeological finds to help us understand the text. The Torah reflects an entire worldview concerning the nature of God and of human beings, the task of Israel and the way in which we are to live. Thus it is an ancient text that is ever new and always renewing itself. One studies it not only to learn what was, but also to discover what we are and how we are to live. These prefaces are meant to complement and enrich your study of the portion by pointing out important ideas found therein and raising problems and questions for consideration. Enter into the Torah text with this lively companion and experience the full impact of the age-old – and totally new – weekly portion. Reviews: “ Entering Torah is a warm, welcoming embrace, a door opening to a world of wisdom, compassion and spirit, and the guiding hand of a master teacher and rabbinic sage. I can't think of a better companion to explore the ways that God, Jews and the world have loved each other across the ages!” – Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson , Dean, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies Vice President, American Jewish University “A wonderfully enlightening and inspiring set of introductions to the Torah readings! Rabbi Hammer calls on a rich feast of philosophy, archaeology, science, law and literature to make the Torah readings relevant to the modern, college-educated Jew of the 21st century. Rather than dodging the hard questions that the Torah raises, he helps us confront them and formulate an intelligent, honest and meaningful appreciation of what the Torah can and does teach us.” – Rabbi Elliot Dorff, PhD , Rector and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy American Jewish University “Reuven Hammer is a consummate commentator of sacred Jewish texts, biblical and liturgical. In a felicitously entitled new work, Entering Torah , he guides us through a world that is simultaneously ancient and modern. He has a keen sense of narrative development and in his section on the Book of Genesis, his sketches of the Patriarchs are both compelling and challenging...Artfully written.” – Professor Bezalel Porten , Hebrew University, Jerusalem A veritable thesaurus of ideas and insights based on the weekly Torah portions, all of which are relevant to us today. This is must reading for all who wish to taste and learn from the wellsprings of our Book of Books and to become immersed in the wisdom of ages. - Professor Shalom Paul Professor Emiritus and Former Chair of the Bible Department Hebrew University, Jerusalem A valuable resource for individual reading as well as study groups...
