Faitelson’s original account was published in seven languages. This new edition presents a broad gallery of cynical and cruel Nazi murderers – wild beasts on two legs, the organizers and leaders of the mass murder of the Jews of Kovno, as well as the thousands of Jews brought to the Ninth Fort from central and western Europe. At the same time, there is a description of the “Actions” – the mass murders of men, women, children and the elderly whose only “crime” was to be born to a Jewish mother. At the heart of the story are the corpse-burners, the preparations they made to escape from hell, the escape itself and the fate of the escapees. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alex Faitelson survived the Holocaust, having lost his parents, his kin and his friends. He was an active member of the Anti-Fascist Fighting Unit (AKO) of the Kaunas Ghetto. Faitelson received the “Isaac Zandman Prize in Literature” for the original Yiddish edition of Heroism and Bravery in Lithuania 1941-1945” from the Federation of Partisan Soldiers. The English edition of Heroism and Bravery in Lithuania (Gefen Publishing) was published in 1996. The imagery in this Yom Kippur prayer book is particularly meaningful to children because they were created from the perspective of a the artist, who is a child. Jewish and universal themes from the Yom Kippur prayer service such as the sound of the Shofar, Divine mercy, sacrifice, the temple, sin, repentence, prayer and charity are represented in a way that is endearing and intreguing to adults as well as children. Every child will now be able to better understand the meaning and essence of this holy day celebrated by Jews throughout the world. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Noam Zimmerman, age 14, lives in Kfar Adumim in Israel. She has been engaging in the art of “fimo”, or clay sculpting, for over four years. The original publication of this machzor was given as a gift at her Bat Mitzvah celebration; Zimmerman worked on the project for over nine months. “In order to connect to the prayers and understand them on Yom Kippur… In order to feel the words and tune the heart to the sanctity of the day, I have made these clay images that reflect passages from the prayer.” – Noam Zimmerman, Age 14 July, 2006 Here are samples of the Yom Kippur Prayers included in this prayer book Evening Prayer - Maariv Kol Nidrei May all the people of Israel be forgiven, including all the strangers who live in their midst, for all the people are at fault. Please forgive the iniquities of this people, according to Your abundant kindness, even as You have forgiven this people ever since they left Egypt. The Lord said: “I pardon them as you have asked.” Confession - Viduy We have acted treasonably, aggressively and slanderously. We have acted brazenly, viciously and fraudulently. Our God, act for Your own sake, not ours; look at our condition, how low and destitute we are. Bring healing to a drifted leaf; have compassion on man who is mere dust and ashes. From the Piyutim recited after Maariv As helm in the hand of the seaman, who handles or abandons it at will, so are we in Your hand, gracious God; heed Your pact, heed not the Accuser. Morning Prayer Shacharit Extol the Lord with a harp; sing to Him with a ten-string lyre: Sing to Him a new song; skillfully play sounds of jubilation. We are Your Congregation and You are our Destiny; we are Your sheep and You are our Shepherd; we are Your vineyard and You are our Watchman; we are Your work and You are our Creator; we are Your faithful and You are our Beloved. Our Father Our King - Avinu Malkeinu Our Father, our King, we have sinned before You. Our Father, our King, tear up the evil sentence decreed against us. Our Father, our King, fill our storehouses with plenty. Our Father, our King, have compassion on us, on our children and our infants. Our Father, our King, be gracious to us and answer us, though we have no merits; deal charitably and kindly with us and save us. Additional Holiday Prayer - Mussaf Unetaneh Tokef Kedushat Hayom Let us tell how utterly holy this day is and how awe-inspiring. It is the day when Your dominion shall be exalted, Your throne shall be established on mercy, and You shall occupy it in truth. It is true that You are judge and arbiter, discerner and witness, inscribing and recording all forgotten things. You open the book of records and it reads itself; every man’s signature is contained in it. The great shofar is sounded; a gentle whisper is heard; the angels, quaking with fear, declare: “The day of judgment is here to bring the hosts of heaven to justice!” Indeed, even they are not guiltless in Your sight. All mankind passes before You like a flock of sheep. As a shepherd seeks out his flock, making his sheep pass under his rod, so do You make all the living souls pass before You; You count and number Your creatures, fixing their lifetime and inscribing their destiny. But repentance, prayer and charity annul the severity of the decree. But repentance, prayer and charity annul the severity of the decree. But repentance, prayer and charity annul the severity of the decree. He is like a broken clay pot, withered grass a flower that fades, a shadow that passes, a cloud that vanishes, a breeze that blows, dust that floats and a dream that flies away. The Temple Service - Seder Haavodah For his sake You made the covenant of the rainbow as a statute, and in Your loving regard of his savory offering, You blessed his children. You gave him twelve tribes, beloved of the exalted G-d; they were called “loved ones” from their very birth. A forehead-plate, a robe, a breastplate, an ephod, a tunic, linen breeches, a turban and a sash. He was then given the golden vestments which he put on; he sanctified his hands and feet from a golden pitcher. Arousing within himself feelings of reverence, he entered the Holy of Holies, and when he reached the Ark, he set down the fire-pan between the staves of the Ark. He transferred all the incense from the ladle into his hands, put it on the glowing coals to the west side and waited there until the Holy of Holies became filled with smoke. He hastened and took the blood of the bullock from the stand whereon he had placed it, dipped his finger in the blood... and sprinkled from it upon the curtain... And thus he would count: One! One and one; one and two; one and three; one and four; one and five; one and six; one and seven! When the priests and the people standing in the Temple court heard God’s glorious and revered Name clearly expressed by the high priest with holiness and purity, they fell on their knees, prostrated themselves and worshiped; they fell upon their faces and responded: Blessed be the name of His glorious majesty forever and ever. …and he took off the golden vestments. His own garments were brought to him and he put them on; and they accompanied him to his house. He would celebrate a festive day for his coming out from the Holy of Holies in peace. How glorious indeed was the high priest when he safely left the holy of holies! Like the clearest canopy of heaven was the countenance of the priest. Like lightning flashing from benign angels was the countenance of the priest. Like the purest blue of the four fringes was the countenance of the priest. Like the wondrous rainbow of the bright cloud was the countenance of the priest. Like the splendor G-d gave the first creatures was the countenance of the priest. Like the rose in a beautiful garden was the countenance of the priest. Afternoon Prayer Make our sins white as snow and wool, as it is written: Come now, let us reason together—says the Lord— even if your sins will be as scarlet, they will become white as snow; even if they will be red as crimson, they will become [white] as wool. Ne’ila (Concluding) Prayer Open for us the gate of prayer, even at the closing of the gate, even now that the day has declined. When the day declines into sunset, let us enter into Your gates. Almighty King… O G-d, who instructed us to recite the thirteen divine qualities, remember, in our favor, the covenant of the thirteen qualities, as You revealed them to gentle Moses... Then the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed: Hashem, Hashem, G-d, Compassionate and Gracious, Slow to anger and Abundant in Kindness and Truth. Preserver of kindness for thousands of generations, Forgiver of iniquity, willful sin, and error, and Who cleanses. And seal all Your people of the covenant for a happy life. May we and all Israel Your people be remembered and sealed before You in the book of life and blessing, peace and prosperity, for a happy life and for peace. Shema Yisrael Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. Three times: Blessed be the name of his glorious majesty forever and ever. Seven times: The Lord is God! The shofar is sounded once. Next year in Jerusalem! Reviews: The concepts, significance, and traditions associated with Yom Kippur can be difficult for children to understand. A new book, the Yom Kippur Children's Machzor serves as both an educational and inspirational text that will help to introduce the Yom Kippur Machzor (holiday prayer book) to young children. This Machzor includes extracts drawn from the Machzor HaMikdash for Yom Kippur, which highlight important concepts and prayers. The text is presented in vowelized Hebrew along with an English translation of the text. By far, however, the focus of this book is on the illustrations... The Yom Kippur Childrens Machzor is illustrated with clay images that were designed and sculpted by Noam Zimmerman, using Fimo, a polymer clay that you can harden in a household oven. Zimmerman, who lives in Kfar Adumin, Israel, comes from an Orthodox family and she created these clay creations as part of her Bat Mitzvah project. The sculptures used to illustrate this text range from faceless figures in prayer to sheep, flowers, and architectural elements. The sculptures are extremely detailed and engaging to look at. In all, this project took her nine months to complete. The clay sculptures are not mere illustrations. Rather they serve to give a visual representation to the emotions, concepts, and traditions contained within the prayers of the Yom Kippur Machzor. Yom Kippur Childrens Machzor is a wonderfully innovative prayer book for young children, whose illustrations will delight and inspire the entire family! Like his fellow Jews, Mayer Aaron studies Torah and goes to the synagogue three times a day. Unlike everybody else, he also owns a lemon tree. When the lemons are ripe his wife Raizel brews her special lemonade, chills it and puts it in jars so that Mayer Aaron can make extra money for the family by selling it in the town square. Even though Raizel is very possessive about the lemons, Mayer Aaron realizes that they have more than enough. While he finds a way to secretly share the extra lemons with the village’s poor people, Raizel thinks a thief is stealing them. The plot thickens as Raizel sits outside guarding the family property, only to find that her husband has a lesson he wants to hand down from generation to generation. Reviews: Lemons may be known for their tartness, but here’s a case where lemons are sweet, indeed. “Mayer Aaron Levi and His Lemon Tree,” a story within a story, conveys the concept of tzedakah. Perfect for young children, the endearing book by Israeli author Tami Lehman-Wilzig teaches an important lesson without ever sounding preachy. It starts off on a friendly note, picturing a kid wearing a baseball cap and sneakers, sitting in front of his house, his puppy by his side. He holds up a potted plant. “My name is Joshua,” he says. “I’ve just come back from my grandparents’ house. Grandpa gave my dad a black iron pot filled with soil and a small tree trunk … It’s a thick branch chopped off the lemon tree that stood in a large vat in my great-great grandfather’s front yard over 70 years ago. There’s a story behind this …” He tells it the way his grandfather told him. Thus we meet Mayer Aaron Levi and his wife, Raizel. They live in a small village where the homes look alike and the people have very little money. The men study Torah and go to synagogue three times a day. The women work in the house. The children play outside only after completing their studies and household chores. Mayer Aaron Levi treats his lemon tree with tender loving care. It grows in a vat in the front yard, but in the winter he brings the tree inside, setting it down near the living room window and by the fireplace, where it will receive sunlight and warmth. In the spring, he returns the tree outside. As if to thank the caring Levi, the tree is bountiful. It produces enough lemons that Raizel can make tasty lemonade, which she sells to eager villagers. She too esteems the lemon tree, because the income it generates enables her to purchase clothing for her children. So when Raizel discovers that lemons are mysteriously disappearing, she swings into action. Determined to catch the thief, she plops a chair outside and sits by the front gate — morning, noon and night — for three days. Not a soul shows up, and she is convinced she has nipped this thievery in the bud. But she hasn’t solved the mystery, and is ultimately surprised to learn that her husband has a hand in the missing fruit. There’s a worthwhile lesson to be learned from this parable, which is nicely complemented by the artwork. Artist Ksenia Topaz, who emigrated from Moscow to Israel in 1991, captures Jewish village and family life in her richly detailed, evocative illustrations. “Mayer Aaron Levi and His Lemon Tree” kicks off a new series conceived and written by Lehman-Wilzig for Gefen publishers. Called Jewish Heirloom Stories, each original folktale revolves around a Jewish value that is designed to bond multiple generations. Each concludes with an activity calling for children to sit down with their parents and grandparents to write their own story on a similar theme. If this is an indication of what’s to come, bring on the others. 'I wanted to share the story through the eyes of a young boy because many of us felt like children in the presence of the late Pontiff. I also believe that my story, which explains the lessons of the Pope, would be better understood by children reading what happened during that Friday night Shabbat dinner. By children understanding the truths expressed in this book, I am confident that they may be better able to share the Pope's lessons. It is my wish that it will build bridges among all people on Earth.” -Jacques Shore, 2006 Reviews: Friday Night with the Pope is the second children's book written by Jacques J. M. Shore. His first children's book was the award winning, Menorah in the Night Sky. As an adult, Shore, who is an attorney, and his mother Lena, a Holocaust survivor, actually met with Pope John Paul II. Working from this real life event, Shore has crafted a compelling story for children about eleven-year-old Jacob and his mother Lena who were invited to have a Shabbat dinner with Pope John Paul II. Entertaining and educational, this book is well suited for new readers, and as a read aloud book. Although technically a children's book, this story will also delight adults. The text is printed in a 14-point font. This larger than normal font size will help to make it easier for new readers to decipher unfamiliar words. Friday Night with the Pope is a charming book about inter-faith relations, and it is wonderfully illustrated by Amalia Hoffman. Her illustrations are warm and inviting, offering the opportunity for younger readers to follow the story from the pictures alone. Within the body of the story presented in Friday Night with the Pope, Shore talks briefly about the steps that Pope John Paul II has taken to improve Jewish - Catholic relations, and he explains a bit about the Pope's history and his teaching about unity. He also discusses some of the aspects of the Shabbat dinner by having Jacob recite the Kiddush. This is all done without being preachy, or pushing the religious elements of the story. Rather what comes across in this story is that the Pope was a pleasant man, who sincerely wanted to encourage peace and unity among all people. For ages 5-9. These vivid descriptions piece together a stirring portrait of a people struggling to maintain normal life in the most abnormal of settings. The Indictment shows how the Arab war against Israel has taken shape as an expertly waged propaganda war, and how latent anti-Semitism contributes to the worlds acceptance of thinly veiled lies. Drawing on documented events and news sources, Auschwitz-survivor Sabina Citron takes a fearless look at the roots of Christian anti-Semitism and how it creates a receptive audience for the Arab propaganda war on Israel. Reviews: The Indictment – a modern day J’Accuse – constitutes a wealth of straight-shooting education on the Arab-Israeli confl ict, anti- Semitism and Islamic terrorism, shedding light on the “writing on the wall,” highlighting Western hypocrisy and the lethality of complacency, pacifi sm, ignorance of historical precedents and the “two states solution.” Ambassador (ret.) Yoram Ettinger Expert on US and Mideast politics With meticulous documentation and scalpel-edged prose, Sabina Citron’s Th e Indictment lays bare the full panoply of lies, distortions, slanders, and illusions that have shaped the public’s conception of Jewish history and the Jewish people’s ongoing struggle for the peace and security of Israel, its tiny, beleaguered national homeland. With a perspective on the Arab-Israeli confl ict that is both fresh and incisive, the book renders to Jewish historical truth the ‘day in court’ it has so long been denied. It was ordered by then Prime Minister Menachem Begin to rescue thousands of Ethiopian Jewish refugees in Sudan and “deliver them to me” in the Jewish state. No stranger to action in enemy countries, the agency established a covert forward base in a deserted holiday village in Sudan, and deployed a handful of operatives to launch and oversee the exodus of the refugees to the Promised Land, by sea and by air, in the early 1980s. Gad Shimron, the author of this book, was one of their number. First published in Hebrew in 1998, this updated English version of the book offers a thrilling firsthand account of how the operation was put in place, and how the Mossad team in Sudan brought it off, despite great personal risk, running a partying vacation spot for wealthy tourists by day as they stole through the Sudanese desert to rescue desperate refugees by night. The book sheds light on American involvement in the latter stages of the operation, when the White House facilitated an airlift of Ethiopian Jews and the CIA station in Khartoum sheltered the last Mossad operatives, on the run from Libyan secret service agents, and spirited them out of Sudan in special boxes labeled “Diplomatic Mail.” Enhanced by Gad Shimron’s wide-ranging historical observations and his crisp, incisive prose, this is at once an entertaining read and a powerful tale of idealistic heroism. This eleventh and final volume of A Restatement of Rabbinic Civil Law by Rabbi Emanuel Quint represents a monumental and unprecedented achievement in the scholarship of rabbinic jurisprudence. In this restatement, Rabbi Quint brings fresh insight, modern research methodology, and succinct explication to Hoshen haMishpat, one of the four sections of the Shulhan Aruch. A Restatement of Rabbinic Civil Law opens the brilliant halachic work of the Shulhan Aruch to the wider audience it deserves: to the educated lay person and advanced scholar alike. The result is a comprehensive, well-organized body of rabbinic jurisprudence, available to the English reader for the first time. Volume XI is an index and cumulative table of contents of all ten volumes and serves as a guide to enable the reader and researcher to find any and all topics contained in the first ten volumes of the Restatement of Rabbinic Civil Law. Rabbi Quint, the cofounder of the Jerusalem Institute of Jewish Law (with Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz), an institute dedicated to the study and dissemination of Jewish civil law, brings his professional expertise to bear on the vastarray of Jewish legal processes, procedures, and practices encoded here. The reader maybe surprised and challenged in the discovery that such a meticulous legal - yet not overly religious - system fits under the category of Jewish law. In his unique position as ordained rabbi, successful lawyer, and distinguished Talmudic scholar, Rabbi Quint illuminates Judaism not only as a religion, but also a cultureand community. A Restatement of Rabbinic Civil Law provides the author’s own commentary and also incorporates the four centuries ofscholarship since the Shulhan Aruch was written, including commentaries and responsa literature. Ample footnotes help to guide thereader every step of the way. If the Shulhan Aruch can be said to be thedistilled essence of Jewish law, then A Restatement of Rabbinic Civil Law triumphsas a major judicial-literary landmark of its own. Reviews: My heart rejoiced to hear the good news that the final volume of your work on Hoshen haMishpat is about to be published. The Nazis storm through Moravia, Bohemia and Slovakia like a tornado, destroying synagogues and lives in their path. In the process, among the items they took are Torah scrolls and adornments such as mantles, crowns and breastplates. These are taken to Prague, the country's capital. By the end of the Second World War, 1,564 Czech Torahs had been stolen by the Nazis and lay forgotten in Prague. Twenty years later, the scrolls were negotiated with the Czech authorities and transferred to the Westminster Synagogue in London, where some of them are displayed to this day. This is the historic and dramatic story of the rescue of 1,564 Torah scrolls after they had been forgotten in Prague for years. I am a Holocaust Torah is the historic and dramatic story of the 1,564 Torahs through the mind, heart and words of one of the Torahs itself. This holocaust account is uniquely told from the point of view of a personified Torah. Using a Torah to narrate the story enables Rabbi Goodman to present the emotive content of the holocaust in a profound way to children of all ages. I am very, very old. I was very tired. Now I am alive again. Some Torah's are more handsome than others, depending on the script crated by the sensitive, loving, religious hand that carefully and lovingly stroked the letters onto the parchment.
